It was in 1896 when Perthshire grocer and wine merchant, Matthew Gloag, first created his whisky. Unconventional from the start, he named his whisky after an iconic Scottish bird rather than himself. And so the Grouse brand was born.
It was the popularity of the whisky together with the quality of the liquid, which led to the success of his whisky – which was the reason he added the word ‘Famous’ to the name in 1905.
